We loved our houses and homes topic in January. We started our topic by going for a walk around the block to check out the different types of houses in the area. We saw apartments, detached, semi-detached and terraced houses. These houses inspired us to build lots of different houses in our play session. Our role-play corner was the construction site. We did our health and safety training before the site was open. Thanks to M. Jackie’s dad and BAM contractors for supplying us with hard hats, goggles and hivis. There was a health and safety officer on site daily to ensure the site was meeting the standards.
Following some careful planning our budding engineers designed and created a 10 bedroom mansion with 6th class (Room 15). We loved working with our buddies, they were so kind and patient with us. Our 10 bedroom mansion, with swimming pool and large gardens has generated a lot of interest. Mike Mullery local auctioneer has even offered to sell our mansion. It is available on his website for anyone who is interested. However, this unique mansion has been listed as ‘priceless’ so we are not sure if anyone will be able to afford it.
We read Na Trí Mhuicín in Irish and carried out some experiments to see which house was the strongest. We made teach tuí, teach adhmaid agus teach bríce. We had a slight problem as the bricks we have to play with in our classroom are made from ‘adhmaid’. We brought our Teach Adhmaid outside and extended our experiment to see how they would survive outside. We put alot of thought into where would be the best place to put our house. Lots of the children looked for areas of the ‘Sensory garden’ that were sheltered.
